Puerto Cancun Golf Club - Designed by British Open Champion Tom Weiskopf, this 18-hole par 72 course offers a great challenge to the scratch golfer with 7,000 yards and fairways, as well as a challenge for all types of players due to its unique experiences on huge greens with a mix perfect between nature and modernity surrounded by the ecological reserve, which also achieves incredible views of the Caribbean Sea, the canals and the protected mangrove swamp. The course was built in 2013, but under new ownership in 2021, with new homes surrounding many of the holes.

If you are staying at Dreams Vista, you will save on greens fees. Price as of July 2023 was $220 per round of 18, while Dreams Vista guests get a discounted rate of $140 per round. Club rentals are either $45 or $65 for Clevelands, or Srixon. The carts do not offer GPS, which is a bummer, but I was able to use my app I have in the states called Golf Now Compete as the course was in the system. It also helped that I was paired up with a member and with a 4 handicap, it was like having a personal caddy on the course.

We were staying at Dreams Vista, and made reservations through the preferred club. The day that you play, you will want to go to the beach, over behind the hut for the jetski’s. 20 Min before tee time (or earlier if you want to practice), the course will send someone to get you in a cart. Make sure to give them a couple bucks for the ride as they do not charge for the pick up and drop off.

As far as the course, it is really like playing two courses. The 1st 9 holes are harder, with having to hit targets otherwise your shots will be very challenging between doglegs and lots, did I say lots of traps both fairway and all around the greens. Most of the sand is very playable, using any iron to get out as long as you are not against the lip. For example, hole 7 I found the fairway trap on a drive, but was able to use a 4 iron for about 190 yards out of the trap. Lob clubs around the greens can be tough as the ground is so hard and with the grass so short, if you have a line to put, I would suggest putting as the greens are not fast and the ball will slow down.

Favorite hole - It is hard to pick just 1 as like I mentioned, the course is like playing 2 different courses. Hole #8 is a beautiful par 3, 195 yards from the white, with all water in front, and traps on the sides and back of a fairly large green. I used a 4 iron off the tee, and was about 10-12 feet behind the pin, dropped the birdie! Then hole 13 which is another par 3, 192 yard shot. Dreams Vista on the left (don’t put it in the pool), 6 traps surrounding the entire green, and the ocean wind and view behind the hole. Same club as on #8, a 4 iron off the tee, and I was 40 yards short due to the ocean breeze pushing the ball back.

Lastly, hole 18 is a great way to finish the course. Beautiful tee box view on this par 5. If you drive past the trees, you will see the marina surrounding the island green for your approach shot. Carefull of the traps, and water surrounding the green, but it was a picture perfect way to end a beautiful round of golf.
